A poem in The Rialto

rialtoGetting a poem into The Rialto is one of my poetry highlights, certainly of this year and probably of my poetry life. When I received a letter of acceptance from the editors in February I leapt about my house with happiness and even had a little cry. Why all the fuss? I suppose because ever since I started seriously writing poetry, it’s been one of my aims to be published in The Rialto. It’s notoriously hard to get a poem accepted – the magazine receives about 12,000 poems a year and publishes 180 – and I might have given up if I was turned down again this time (this was the second time I’d submitted to them and they take ages to reply (understandably, considering the number of submissions).

The Rialto pays for every poem. Cash. What a novelty. My £20 will go poem in Rialtostraight back into The Rialto coffers as I will use it to renew my subscription. There’s even going to be a London launch of this issue on June 4th but, sadly, I won’t be able to go. Perhaps you can? I’ve stuck the details onto my fridge.   And if you’d like to buy a copy of Issue 80 with poems by Pascale Petit, Fleur Adcock, Mimi Khalvati, Matthew Sweeney and many others (including me, hurray!), details are here.  Can’t wait to receive my copy.

    1. Thanks, Tania! I’m looking forward to hearing more about your experiences at Totleigh Barton – a very special and important place to me. If I hadn’t done a Starting to Write course there in 1992 I probably wouldn’t be writing now. xx

  1. Congratulations Josephine! Is it this summer issue? My dear friend Alicia Stubbersfield has a couple of poems in it as well. Can’t wait to have a read of them. Great achievement.

    1. Thanks very much, Mick! It is indeed the same issue! I’ve only just received my copy as I’ve been in Liverpool for a few days. I’m looking forward to reading – it is PACKED with poems! 🙂
