I rarely meet anyone for coffee

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I rarely meet anyone for coffee or lunch or dinner or any kind of beverage or refreshment or meal.  I’d say “Instead of meeting somewhere for coffee, would you like to come round to my house and I will make you a delicious mixture of hot chocolate and coffee and milk?”

I tend to call this my mocha but I doubt that any self-respecting barista would call it that.  I’d also offer you tea; regular, black, with milk or with lemon, and as I was suggesting lemon, my mind would be racing around my fruit bowl frantically searching for one that hadn’t turned green.  We also have licorice tea, or peppermint or berry tea, I’d say to you, giving you the impression of crumb-free cupboards bursting at the hinges with tempting produce. (This would be what I hoped you’d be thinking).

There’s loose-leaf tea here, I certainly own a teapot and I’m sure there’s a tea-strainer in here, I’d say, wildly signalling to a robin or sparrow in our garden to distract you from actually looking inside any kitchen drawers.  I have real coffee (not instant) in my fridge but I think it’s past its best.  I’d apologise for this and my regret would probably be less sincere than it sounded.

While I was telling you all of this, I’d be moving around you in the kitchen, loading and unloading the dishwasher, sorting through clean laundry and putting in a load of washing.  I’d keep talking and listening while I folded clean clothes and distributed them to bedrooms.  Bring your drink with you, I’d call over my shoulder, as I climbed the stairs with the clothes basket.

I’d tidy the house and chop vegetables for the evening meal and take you with me to whizz around the supermarket while we carried on our conversation.  I’d tell you how much I liked having you with me while I did all this stuff.  I might use a ruder word than ‘stuff’.

I’d drop you back at your house and tell you how much I’d enjoyed our meeting.

“Same time, same place, next week?” I’d say. “It’s been so good to see you.”

  1. Josephine,
Thanks for the coffee. I think I’ll sneak into your place and bring you over here on a magic carpet and you could enjoy a walk along the beach with me and the dogs. I might even suspend time so you don’t get behind on things at home. I have some health issues so operate on what i call a small engine so I have to pace myself. It was my husband’s 50th birthday yesterday and we’ve been out for dinner and had friends over. It’s been a bit mad and I spent a lot of time working on the house and baking. I love baking and you really do need a crowd to bake for. I hate waste.
Actually, I’m having a slice of chocolate mouse cake with my cup of tea now and you’re welcome to have a piece. There’s plenty left.
Hope you have a great week.
    xx Rowena
